MS: difference between quadrupole/ion-trap/ FT-ICR iontrap ?
« on: December 22, 2007, 12:41:16 PM »
Hello,

i just wonder what the difference between a quadrupole ( used as massfilter) a (quadrupole) ion Trap and a FT-ICR iontrap is...

i've read some articles and searched in some books, but i can't figure out a real difference ( especially between quadrupole & ion trap)

would be great if anyone of you could try to explain it^^

thx,

Diablooo

ICR is much more sensitive and analytes travel in typical cyclotron motion.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Quadrupole: Ions go through a cylindrical magnetic field to a detector

Ion Trap: Ions travel into a chamber and get trapped in a small confined space.  Motion of the ion is not 'cyclotronic' (see below), but is curved and can be modelled.  Ions are ejected as necessary to a detector.

ICR Trap: Ion travels into a chamber and gets trapped in a small confined space.  Motion of the ion is "Typical cyclotron Motion" as Mitch said.  Ions stay in the chamber for detection.
