Why does an organism that uses glycolysis and the Krebs cycle also need the pentose phosphate pathway?

We do need NADPH.  If you are to grow or repair cells for any reason (including regular physical activity), we need NADPH for fatty acid and nucleic acid synthesis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NADP).

I hope this helps  ;)
