POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE AND H2O2 question
« on: January 27, 2008, 08:31:38 AM »
HELLO once again I am here to cause strife,

Potassium permanganate and H2O2 don't react.

BUT add ethanol and set it on fire

Then add the potassium permanganate....

BANG

hehehe

 ;D

Care to explain?

Potassium permanganate and H2O2 don't react.

Yes they do.

2MnO4- + 5H2O2 + 6H+ -> 2Mn2+ + 5O2 + 8H2O

This reaction is basis of permanganometric titration for determination of the H2O2-content.

This is so called net ionic reaction. K+ doesn't change throughout the reaction, so it is called a 'spectator' and is removed from the equation.

So then they did an experiment and nothing happened? Nothing at all.

Seems like a stupid experiment to me.

They react.

That's right nothing happened until Flaming ethanol was added
