refractive index
« on: February 01, 2008, 08:24:09 AM »
Hi, refractive index is a measure of the ability of a substance to bend light.
Can someone confirm if it depends on the density of the substance?
Is polarity of substance also a factor in determining RI
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks Rosie

Dear Rosetta;

I don’t understand your Question!
(- except I assume that you don’t know what a "Refractometer” is.)
As density changes according to concentration of a substance the answer must be YES.
On the other hand I don’t know (except by diamond) any substance you are able to only modify its density.
For the polarity I don’t know also such possibilities, so my answer must be: I don’t (“never”) believe.
(But polarity is a specific “constant” property for a given substance.)

Good Luck!
