Esterification of an Amide
« on: February 02, 2008, 06:43:53 PM »
How can an amide be esterified? But not using so harsh reaction conditions (if possible even not an acid) because the molecule that we'll be working on is a very fragile one!

Diazoalkanes are known to alkylate amides under mild conditions.

But aren't they explosive?

I synthesized diazomethane:
You can handle it well in solution (not too concentrated). It is very toxic and carcinogenic as well. An alternative to diazolkanes are their SiMe3 derivates.

So with diazoethane or triethylsilane can I diethylate my very precious and sensitive amide?

Note: This amide is even sensitive to light (Take this into consideration too)

Triethylsilane won't work.

An alternative to diazolkanes are their SiMe3 derivates.
