Alkylation of thiophene?
« on: March 02, 2008, 09:57:54 AM »
Anyone knows what is the mechanism of alkylation of thiophene and what reagents needed?

Here are some things to think about

Classic methods

Have you heard of Friedel-Kraft alkylation/acylation?
What reagents are required for this reaction?

Is furan aromatic? Is thiophene aromatic?
What position will you alkylate?

C-H activation

Do you know what C-H activation is?
How might sulfur aide in controlling C-H activation by lets say a Ruthenium catalyst?  What position will be alkylated?

Answer these questions.
