Reactivity of metal
« on: March 09, 2008, 12:44:33 AM »
I was wondering what you get for the following question so that i can compair the answer ppl get here with my own.

The following reactions of three metals X, Y, and Z are observed to proceed in the forward direction:

X(s) + Z 2+(aq)   --> X 2+(aq) + Z(s)
Z(s) + Y 2+(aq)   --> Z 2+(aq) + Y(s)

1. if a piece metal Y was placed in a solution of X 2+(aq), would a rection occur, and if so what would it be? Briefly explain the reasoning for your answer?

2. a piece of metal Z was placed in a solutoin of 1M HCl dissolves and releases hydrogen gas. Will the metal X also dissolve in this HCl solution? why?

my answer was:

1. No
2. Yes
