2k electrons and 2l electrons
« on: March 12, 2008, 08:58:25 PM »
An atom of the element beryllium consists of 4 protons, 5 neutrons, 2K electrons, and 2 L electrons. The atomic mass of this atom is
a) 13
b) 9
c) 5
d) 4

I am unsure of what they mean by 2K electrons and 2 L electrons? Could anyone explain please?

Dear Chay722;

K, L, M, etc are the “names” of the 'shells'.

I hope it may be of help.

Good Luck!

And you know how much an electron weighs, relative to a proton or neutron, right?  Look it up, it will help you a lot with these problems.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

K and L are notations that are mostly outdated (I think).  K electrons are electrons in the first energy level (principle quantum number n=1) and L electrons are electrons in the second energy level (n=2).
