ELECTROLYSIS

(1/1)

tegan789:
Hello,
I did an electrolysis practical where copper sulfate was electrolysed using copper electrodes.

One question I did asked to calculate the cell efficiency for each electrode (cathode and anode). I have calculated this using the equation actual amount/theoretical amount * 100.
But there is a question I dont understand - "what should have been the true efficiency of the anode and cathode of the same cell?" How can I calculate this??

It would be great if you could help,
Thank you,
Tegan

Donaldson Tan:
theoretically, all the copper(II) and sulphate ions in solution will be discharged during the process. this is your theoretical amount
