solubility of substances in water
« on: April 02, 2008, 08:19:17 PM »
this is an extra credit question, I searched the net and this forum and could not find an answer that was really related:

solubility g/100g water

MgCl2 (s) magnesium chloride = 54.6
NH3 (g) ammonia = 34.0
CH3CH2OH (l) ethanol = infinite
C6H5COOH (s) benzoic acid = 0.29

Which of the substances can act as either the solute or the solvent when mixed with  100g water at 20 degrees c?

as a wild guess, I would say ethanol.

Good, it's the only one that different in the multiple choices, so you know it must be correct.  Now, what's the definition of solute and solvent?

solvent = what it is dissolved in
solute = what is dissolved

I think I a most confused by "either the solute or the solvent". how can it be both?

How does infinite solubility help?   Try various percentages in your head and see if the answer strikes you.

Infonite means exactly wat this term means.
Have you ever seen ethanol separated from water in glass?
