major product - grignard reaction

if  i was to react phenyl butanoate and propylmagnesium bromide then i am going to get as my maijor product 4-heptanone.

Hi,
it depends upon how many equivalents of Grignard u r going to use!!!! If u r using lesser equivalents u may end up with ketone, but in higher equivalents the major product will be tertiary alcohol( recently i've done one similar reaction). Since ketones are more reactive than esters, immediartely they will react further to form tertiary alocohols....have  a nice time :)

hello,
if U use only one eq of grignard, you should form the ketone and the tertiary alcohol, as a mixture of both 2>. but all depend of the reactivity of your initial ester...
