Thanks for the help everyone. I identified my salt today in lab.

I made a mistake. It wasn't sulfide. It was carbonate.

After a few tests, I confirmed my salt as Nickel Carbonate.

Wo-hoo.  We got to the bottom of it.  One of your early, incorrect,  observations, that there was no gas release with mild acid, is not as uncommon a result as you might think.  If you're not careful, and working in high enough conc.  you can miss things like that.  Look at this post here: http://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?topic=25482.msg96189#msg96189
