Acids and Bases
« on: April 01, 2005, 05:48:37 AM »
Hi,

I have a question where i need to work out which indicator would be best to use for each acid base reaction, I have the pKa values of each indicator that i can use and I am also told the concentrations of the reagents that are used, I as just wondring how to go about this question because surely the pka and pkb values would be the same if the concentrations are the same for each acid and base.

I would be grateful if someone could show me how to go about answerinng this question.

Thanks
Hug a chemist and see the reaction

For every titration calculated pH of endpoint and select the indicator that has pKa as close to that endpoint as possible.

If you are asked this question you probably have a chapter in your book describing how the indicator color changes and what should be taken into consideration when using one or two color indicators.

Hey Borek!
What a coincidence! Do you use any other chemical forums? Would you recommend any? Sorry about braking the topic, but I think it's pretty much answered.

That's not a coincidence, that's hard work. I am registered on at least 10 forums and frequent on three. And I am not the only one - I think I have seen jdurg, Mitch, GCT and budullewraagh in more than one place. But you already know the best ones.

I have to recruit talent somehow. ;)
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex
