In need of assistance:
« on: May 05, 2008, 11:03:50 PM »
Nice site, good info on the left scroll bar.  Used the search function and came up fruitless on the following things that have been aching my mind:

Would Hexanol + Jones Oxidation Rxn give CH3(CH2)4HC=O-OH?

An acetaldehyde and Tollen's Reagent gives CH3C=O-O + NH4 + Ag(s)

C6H12 + HCl gives no rxn

At least point me in the proper direction if possible.

Thanks

Wrt to your first question...I believe Jone's reagent reacts with primary alcohols to give carboxylic acids. Its a two step process (2 oxidations).

Not familar with Tollen's.

Your answer for C6H12 is correct for one possibility, there is another possibility for the structure of C6H12 where your answer is incorrect.
