It can be used to oxidise benzylic aminoalcohols to beta-keto derivatives, ala ephedrine derivatives to the corresponding cathinone, although its a very sensitive reaction as pot perm is a vicious oxidizer and will, given half a chance, oxidise to the corresponding carboxylic acid instead of the ketone.

KMnO4 will oxidise glycerine  when solid KMnO4 is allowed to contact glycerine, it will inflame.

Permanganic acid, prepared by adding DILUTE H2SO4 to a permanganate salt is a strong oxidizer.

Adding conc. H2SO4 on the other hand dehydrates it to Mn2O7, a dark, unstable, explosive oil, which decomposes to O3 and MnO2 amongst other things. Be careful only to do that one as a small scale demo though, it cannot be safely stored as it is extremely unstable and likes to explode spontaneously.

Its good for a lot of organic reactions too.

Worst thing about it, is it gets all over one's hands, leaving small dark stains which are hard to remove, and causes much suffering should the lab tech chance to scratch his nackers, forgetting to remove it all :P

Seriously, it will, don't, you will regret even being born male:P

The Na salt, prepared from the acid, is much more forgiving, and is a lurid highlighter pen shade of green.

In our darkness we can see
So with others blindness
We take flight.

removing permanganate from your skin is easy, use Lemon juice, Vinegar or if you like use the chemical oxalic acid, only downside to the acid is that it leaves the hands very dry.
