Ans
242/94Pt ---> 4/2He + 238/92 U

How did we get to U?
My book mentions something about the neutrons but I am confused on how to get answer. I thank you for all our help.

There's an obvious typographical error here. That should be Pu-242 not Pt-242. Now it will make sense.

One is mass number, second is atomic number. Do you know their definitions?

In nuclear reactions, there are a few things that are conserved.

Conservation of

1. Charge
2. Total number of nucleons
3. Mass-energy
4. Linear momentum
