Dehydrating Magnesium Chloride
« on: August 01, 2008, 01:17:05 PM »
I think my magnesium chloride is probably wet and the water is killing my reaction.  I can't find a definitive answer:  What temperature should I heat the magnesium chloride hydrate to drive off the water?  Is 300 degC a safe bet?

I'd say 200, or you might decompose to chlorine and magnesium oxide.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

good point, thanks.  Turns out my oven only goes to 200.  So that'll be my limiting factor.
