Is there anything called a perfect drug?
« on: July 19, 2008, 05:43:54 PM »
If we neglect the nature own way of getting "high on life".

Is there a perfect drug? With no risk of addiction, no harmful bieffects, no risk of overdose and so on, just a long happy feeling or whatever you want?

Someone claims that psychoactive drugs are perfect. Are they?

But my claim is, whatever you do, you got to simulate nature own drugs in your body. And by doing that you overrides the homeostatic balance. The fooled body will adapt to the changes, and so you have hit the first wall. The second wall is administerings-methods. Its is nearly impossible to administer the substance in such a way that it is natural. You must influence systems that are beyond the target, and that will have consequences.

What do you think?
No single thing abides, but all things flow.
Fragment to fragment clings, and thus they grow
Until we know and name them.
Then by degrees they change and are no more
The things we know.

No matter what the drug is, if it feels good you're at minimum going to develop a psychological dependence.

Depends on what you define perfect as...

If curing cancer is your goal, then feeling happy is kinda a pointless metric to define the perfect drug by isn't it?

As I see it, without further focusing, this "thought experiment" is sort of pointless, because you first need to define the goal that the drug is attempting to reach.  If you goal is to cure blindness, again, feeling happy is a pointless metric to measure.

As Paracelsus almost said "the dose makes the poison".

Substances often considered toxic can be benign or beneficial in small doses, and an ordinarily benign substance can be deadly if over-consumed.

Even something as apparently innocuous as water can be dangerous (and I don't just mean drowning).

At some stage you have to look at side effects and see if they are really worse than what you're trying to cure.

edit for spellcheck

Yes there is the perfect drug. It is called enjoying the pleasures of life. Drugs tend to stimulate natural body responses. These responses happen for certain reasons. Sexual encounters, and even stressful physical activity such as an intense workout can lead to highly stimulating those natural responses.

in an imperfect world nothing is perfect...
except for a perfect passing grade in the final exams while you have a failing grade in the last exams..
perfect just what i need a perfect grade in the finals....
