Need help with making an emulsion
« on: August 05, 2008, 07:16:21 PM »
I am trying to make an emulsion of mineral oil and water. I would like the emulsion to be "water thin," so it will definitely have more water than oil (an oil in water emulsion??).

I considered using one or more of the following emulsifiers: soy lecithin, span 60, or polysorbate 60.

I don't have a sophisticated lab, but I would like to know how much of each ingredient (mineral oil, water, emulsifier) to make a homogenous, mostly water emulsion.

It's been over 10 years since I took any college chem classes. Any help or direction is appreciated!

Thanks, Shane

To add to my previous post, I would like to try an emulsion with 4 parts water to 1 part mineral oil by volume.
Thanks,
Shane

I have no idea about correct amounts, but why don't you try experimentally?

I did try, but I just made a mess. I started with 200 mL water, 50 mL mineral oil, then kept adding span 60 to try to get it to emulsify, but it would not. I know that there's a way to calculate how much of each is needed to get an emulsion, but I don't know how to figure it out.
