Macbook for a chem major?

Is getting a macbook for a chem major a good idea? I'm also going to be doing some chem research.

Any laptop will be fine. You just need something that will run the Office suite.
There is more free software available for PC's though (chemistry related and non-chemistry related). But whatever the person wants and is comfortable with.

I personally would spend half the money in purchasing a MacBook and buy the equivalent hardware version of a laptop PC, and then use the money on tasty food. But again, whatever the person is most comfortable with.

Where can I find the free software? Online?
I'm experiencing both Alzheimer's and Deja Vu right now, I think I forgot this before.

The thing I use most on my laptop is a spreadsheet program. It is very similar to excel. It is part of the "Open Office" package. You can find it on Yahoo if you just type in "open office."
