Thermal Degradation of Hydrocarbons

Is the thermal degradation of all hydrocarbons a exothermic reaction?

As in:

CH4  :rarrow:C + H2 + Q?

If you're talking about heating hydrocarbons intensely under oxygen deficient conditions, I believe they tend to form aromatic chains.
