Mass spectrometers prices, important parameters?
« on: September 15, 2008, 06:59:58 AM »
Hi folks,

My prof. told me to prepare a short presentation about this:

Assume that you have a small company and you would like to characterize a recombinant protein. What kind of MS would you chose?
(With assumption that u have not big budget etc)

My own answer would be:
First i should use an instrument which is capable for MS/MS (structural characterization etc..)
Maybe an ESI-Ion-trap ?  or a Quadrupole ?

Since i'm not an expert in this field (i know MS theorie stuff but haven't any clue about what is cheaper or so) i'm thankful for any suggestions from your side.

ESI is the way to go. MALDI would work also. Quadrupoles are great too.

Ideally you would want an ESI Quadrupole with an Ion Trap.

And they are really nice too, I use one pretty much every day! :)

Now, about cost and such....that is just research and finding the costs and some equivalent systems and comparing them.

The ESI Quadrupole with Ion Trap is really expensive though! :)
