Nickel(2) reaction with sulfuric acid help
« on: September 30, 2008, 02:22:13 PM »
1) Calculate the maximum mass of nickel(2) sulfate NiSO4.7H2O that could b made from 25cm³ 1.0mol dm-³ Sulfuric acid

Molar mass of NiSO4.7H2O = 280.9

2) Suggest why the yield of nickel sulfate crystals is likely to be lower than the maximum mass calculated

please help...i dont quite understand this work i was given =S

1. Simple stoichiometry. Start with the reaction equation.

2. No idea what they want, question is too vague for the general answer. Most likely it refers to things that were discussed in class.

What specifically don't you understand?

Start by writing an equation for the formation of nickel(II) sulfate (hint: from nickel metal and aqueous sulfuric acid)

Ni+2 + H2SO4 ---> NiSO4 + 2 H+

and then?

Ni+2 + H2SO4 ---> NiSO4 + 2 H+

and then?

Nope, nickel metal, ie. nickel(0), Ni

So..

Ni + H2SO4 ----> NiSO4 + ?

i believe when you do crystallization(since they talking about crystals) or purification, you do loss some of the yield. but i not very sure though...
No matters what results are waiting for us, it's nothing but the DESTINY!!!!!!!!!!!!
