N-Methyl -2-pyrrolidone chemical seperation
« on: April 19, 2005, 08:32:01 PM »
I'm having a very difficult time seperating two chemicals that are mixed together.

They have the exact same boiling points, vapour density, freezing points... basically all physical properties.

Someone suggested I use a catalyst to change one chemical and then seperate it, but i dont know how i would do that.

One chemical is, N-Methyl -2-pyrrolidone

Anyone know anything this chemical has an affinity for?

I doubt I will be able to help, but perhaps if you will name BOTH chemicals it will be easier for others to think about some way of separation.

Have you thought about column chromatography?

The other chemical I cannot change. I need it to stay exactly how it is.

I don't have access to a chromatographer

I am not asking to change it - I am asking about the name.

Do it yourself - an it is not a stupid joke. Google 'column chromatography'.

I believe the chemical is called 1,4-Butanediol

Is this chromotography based on density, cause like i mentioned, the two chemicals have the exact same density.

If the chemicals are indeed N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) and 1,4-butanediol, then you should be able to seperate the two based on bioling points.  NMP has a bp of 202 and butanediol has a bp of 230, enough of a difference to do a distiilation of the mixture.
BTW-Here's a decent page on the fundamentals of column chromatography, that may give you a better understanding of the concept.  Also from that page you can get some good techniques on both a simple distillation and fractional distillation.
