Hi,

I am trying to understand what difference there is between the gas phase and aqueous solution when it comes to dealing with spin allowed transitions and ground terms. e.g. the ground term for Cr3+ ions in the gas phase is the 4F term, Now I am supposed to work out the number of spin allowed transitions from the ground state in the gas phase of the Cr3+ ion and then the number of spin allowed transitions in aqueous solution. I don't need anyone to tell me the answer, just to explain what the difference in the two phases are so that I can work it out for myself.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
