Dilute 0.6 M sucrose soln to 0.5M

Given 0.6 M of sucrose solution, how can I dilute this to 0.5M sucrose solution?

My classmates suggests that using ratio to work out the answer.
Like
0.5M/0.6M = x /6

so, get 5 cm3 of sucrose solution from the 0.6M sucrose soln and add ONE cm3 of water.

The final soln will be 0.5M.

But, anyone knows what's the principle? How does this work?
I once used, M1V1=M2V2, but I don't get any clue.

How can we take out 5 portions of the 0.6M sucrose soln and add one cm3 to dilute this to 5 cm3?
