Production of HCL acid, Don't know what being Produced
« on: November 17, 2008, 01:54:25 PM »
I am trying to produce HCL acid using two jars connected with a salt bridge and two copper electrodes connected to a rectified AC current to be like DC current but I don't know what is being formed.

you need to explain more. i have heard of making HCl by electrolysis of salt water, and bubble the chlorine gas through water, but im not sure what your talking about?

wouldn't that make hypochlorous acid 74?

Edit: nvm it gives both.

Ok. I have two jars connected with a salt bridge. In both jars I have sodium chloride dissolved into water. I have DC 4.4 volts/ .88 amps running through two large copper electrodes. The current doesn't seem to be strong enough to cause anything to bubble, but i know something is being formed because it can dissolve aluminum and can clean old copper. Is hydrochloric acid being formed or am I in over my head?

I have no clue. whats a salt bridge? and why do you have salt water in BOTH? define your theory

why do you have salt water in BOTH?

I absolutelly agree. If you had electrolysis in order to form HCl you had the following reaction 2 NaCl + 2 H2O   (electrolysis) :rarrow: 2 NaOH + Cl2 + H2. But in this case, you did not need 2 recipients. So I'm pretty confused ??? Are you sure about the problem's text?

Dear Frozensolid;

There will not be any HCl build with brine.

The rectified AC you can handle like DC.
And a salt bridge isn’t required; you can do it in the same beaker.
For your problem you may study:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hypochlorite

Good Luck!
