can you be more specific?
"Say you're in a [chemical] plant and there's a snake on the floor. What are you going to do? Call a consultant? Get a meeting together to talk about which color is the snake? Employees should do one thing: walk over there and you step on the friggin snake." - Jean-Pierre Garnier, CEO of Glaxosmithkline, June 2006

there's a good reason why elements are no longer classified as metal, non-metal or metalloids. Refer to the new ACS periodic table for more information.

Its pretty much impossible to come up with a definative list of qualities that are either metallic or non-metallic (see previous posts).  However, you can make a few generalities, although there are many exceptions:

Metals: tend to conduct electricity, have high MP and BP, and oxidize (not in the rusting sense but in the red-ox sense);

Non-metals: tend not to conduct, have low MP and BP, and reduce.

Obvious caveats: graphite, a conducting non-metal; diamond, a high MP non-metal, mercury, a low MP metal, etc.
