Reaction between PCl3 and Triethylamine
« on: December 17, 2008, 06:39:49 AM »
I was wondering if there should be any reaction for the following:
(C2H5)3N + PCl3  :rarrow: ???

I know it sounds stupid. I observed white fumes while trying to do the addition.  :-[

PCl3 doesn't react with NEt3, although it will react with primary and secondary amines:
PCl3 + 6 RNH2 --> P(NHR)3 + 3 RNH2Cl

PCl3 is moisture-sensitive.  Even the small amount of water in the air is enough.
PCl3 + 3 H20 --> H3PO3 + 3 HCl
The white fumes you saw were HCl - hope that helps.

Hi
N and P may bond together to form phosphazines  and can catenate together to form polymers .These compounds are called as phosphonitrilic halides or poly(chlorophosphazines)
