Assign R or S of this bambuterol molecule
« on: December 31, 2008, 07:04:20 PM »
The chiral carbon is labelled as a red star
I got R for this
Is it correct?

(R) sounds ok to me.
Knowing why you got a question wrong is better than knowing that you got a question right.

Why is this R? When I compare the carbons directly attached to the chiral carbon I see:

(for the benzene pathway)
C-C-C
total weight = 36

vs.

C-H2-N
total weight = 28

Wouldn't this mean the benzene substituent has higher priority making the configuration S???

Edit: never mind, it is so because N is a higher atomic number than C. Guess the weight only matters if the carbon doesn't have a higher atomic number atom attached to it.
