chlroine - iron(II) reducing agent
«

Hi
For my plan I have a reaction where Iron II reduce aqueous chlorine. This is the formula I have for it:
cl2 + 2fe2+ -----> 2fe3+ + cl-
I was just wondering for this reaction what the method would be. I think it is simply add cl2(aq) to excess of fe2+(aq) in a conikal flask and the reaction will take place. Are there any other things needed like higher temp etc.
Any help accpreicated.

i think its more like chlorine oxidises iron (II)
chlorine is a very strong oxidising agent as it is readily reduced from gas to ion.

xiankai is right. if you want to reduce chlorine, try methanoic acid. i think the reaction will be a lil' slow but still works fine. methanoic acid will be oxidised by chlorine to form carbon dioxide.

I am known to be occasionally wrong.

Should work without problems, no idea about kinetics. Heating may help.
Do you have to stick to Fe2+? And what is your priority - reducing Cl2? Or just some redox process?

the solution is added t an excess of a suitable reducing agent such as iron (II) compounds.
Thanks for your replies

Are there signs to show that the reaction has been finished or does one presume it has because an excess of fe2+ was added so all the cl2 reacted?
Thanks

the reaction is effectively instantaneous but there is no great colour change simply a darkening of the solution from pale green to more orange (FeII to FeIII)

u gotta add excess Cl2 not Fe becos Fe is coloured, while Cl's colour is less distinguishable(gas)
and Fe(III) shld be brown, its is rust after all :/

The colour of Fe(III) depends on the ligands atached to it - it may be yellow, orange, red or brown in any shades and intensities

i beleive that we are now facing the same task right....and from what i am told....we need to make our own reducing agent....is it true...
and then how to make it...
can i just simple use FeSO4 that have been supplied by the school or how....
thanks...

which substance do you aim to produce? Fe3+ or Cl-?
