Absorption spectrum of urushiol
« on: April 11, 2005, 04:20:09 PM »
I am looking for a way to visualize urushiol, does anyone know where I may be able to find an absorption spectrum for urushiol? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Urushiol oil is the active compound in poison ivy.
A vague description of the structure is given here in the 6th paragraph -

Just to give a heads up, the structure of urushiol is at this site

The Chemical Structure of Urushiol

look under common names on the left side.

Note:  this doesn't answer Imagee's question only the 2 following it.

I doubt you will find any spectrum of it. If SDBS doesn't have it, then no-one will. They only have 5-pentadecylresorcinol IR spectrum (which is an isomer of urushiol).

There is an old book in the Purdue University library
James B McNair, 1923, Rhus Dermatitis by the University of Chicago Press, Chicago IL 298 pp.  In it he extracted sections of the fine with 90% alcohol and KOH which produced a color change viewable at 649 nm. :-\
