How Prohormones work?
« on: February 07, 2009, 07:35:28 PM »
Can anyone explain to be how a prohormone is converted to a hormone?
Say the difference between a prohormone is a double bond on a different locant on the structure then the actual testosterone itself...how is the bond moved or converted to testosterone? And well does this work?

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Usually, the pro form is specifically recognised by an enzyme that catalyses the chemical conversion, e.g. change of bond, removal of group, or hydrolysis of part of the molecule (frequent in some peptidic hormones), to convert it to the active hormone.
So, it is controlled enzymatically, as are most processes in living beings.
