antibiotic international units to milligram conversion
« on: February 10, 2009, 02:23:53 PM »
Hi, if this is not the best place for it, please help the proper forum.
The problem: I need 1000 IU (international units) of THIOSTREPTON ( a veterinary antibiotic). It is very interesting that ointments that contain it, are said to have such and such milligrams of nystatin, gramicidin etc, but 2000 IU of thiostrepton. How could I possibly make this conversion, PLEASE

IU's are a measure of activity. If the ointment in question contains 2000 IU is that further qualified (eg IU/g) or is it 2000 IU in the total container?  If you need 1000 IU then its either 0.5 g (if IU/g) or half of the container (if it's total IU).
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
