Why is NH3 islobal with [Mn(CO)5]-
« on: February 16, 2009, 12:18:17 PM »
The Mn in the complex is ligated by 5 molecules of CO.  How can this possibly be isolobal with NH3 which has three bonds to hydrogen and a lone pair?

What do you understand by the term isolobal? Seems to me they are fairly similar - heavy atom and a lone pair?

It means the atoms share the same number of valence electrons and same orbital shapes.

Mn has a valence configuration of 3d54S1.  Nitrogen is 2S22p3

To be honest now that I try again to draw it I'm definitely not sure how the Manganese complex would even look so I can compare it to ammonia.  Could you help me out on that?
