Super Saturated Solutions
« on: February 24, 2009, 05:07:52 PM »
I am working on a lab to find salts that when super saturated store the most energy. This energy would be released upon percipitation. I have tried a few salts, and they all failed to super saturate in water or percipitated out uncontrollably. The salts included KNO3, KClO3, KCl.

Do you have any salts that would be good to use for this lab?

Please, if possible, post a link to solubility info!

Dear Mr.Macdonald;

It is not percipitation but it is crystalisation.

Here only one example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPjDO7IlXKI

Try sodium acetate.

Dear nj_bartel;

The given example is Sodium Acetate!  ;) :) :)

Sodium acetate is a common one, but I need about 4 salts

Potassium Acetate?
Litium Acetate?

Dear Mr.Macdonald;

Most Alum are also very good candidates for super saturated solutions.
But I think they are a little slow in crystallisation speed too.

Good Luck!

Try to get ammonium nitrate, you can find it in your local pharmacy, or camping good store.  Just look for an object for sale that's the very opposite of what you're looking at now.  It is very soluble in water, so using little water, you can get a very saturated solution.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

I need a bunch of salts

EDIT: Can you super saturate ammonium nitrate easily
