Acidity of oxo acid of Phosphorus
« on: March 02, 2009, 08:58:43 AM »
Order of acidity:H3PO2 > H3PO3 > H3PO4

Why the order goes like this?
according to what i know is that acid strength will increase with the no. of oxo group

e.g HClO4 > HClO3 > HClO2 > HClO..

Pls help !!!

Check structures of each acid. Are they all triprotic?

Rule you refer to has no application here, regardles of formulas these acids don't have more and more oxygens connected to the central atom (compare with structure of chloric acids that you have listed).
