Need a little bit of help REDOX
« on: March 03, 2009, 04:57:21 PM »
How do i write the products of three reactants  for a redox equation?

KMnO4(-) + NaHSO3(-) + H2SO4 => ?

Please help me understand how to write it and why it works that way.

Well, to help you try to figure it out on your own, since you've been told this is a Red-Ox reaction, can you take a stab at what is reduced, and what is oxidized?  It's a little daunting, at first, doing it that way, but you'll be better off at exam time.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

I think i figured it out

2(5e(-)+ 8H(+) + MnO4(-) >> Mn(+2) + 4H2O)
5(H2O + HSO3(-) >> SO4(-2) + 3H(+) + 2e(-))

= 2MnO4(-) + 5HSO3(-) + 8H(+) >> 5SO4(-2) + 2MN(+2) + 3H2O
