Chemical equation between Cl2 and element 119
« on: March 30, 2009, 06:59:50 PM »
Hello everyone, I need some help with this problem. This is one of my first assignments and I am not getting the chemical equations and balancing. I am suppose to write the equation between chlorine and the theoretical element 119. Can someone help me please?

I am not exactly sure how to approach this since the element doesnt really exist(yet or whatever). If I give it a symbol like Ma, would it just be Cl2 + Ma = Cl2Ma ?

Nothing wrong with your choice of abbreviation, and your equation format.  Now, where, in the periodic table, would element 119 appear?  What charge would it have?  When you have a formula for the product you're sure is correct, then you can balance the equation.

Thank you for the response. I think element 119 would be part of the alkali metals so it would have a charge of +1.

I am not exactly sure how to balance the yield Cl2Ma?

Great, now, what sort of compounds with chlorine do the other alkali metals form?

Hmm, well the only thing that comes to mind is sodium chloride-salt.
