Combustion Of Ethanol
« on: April 08, 2009, 12:20:02 PM »
Using the structural formula equations, draw structural formula illustrating the complete combustion of ethanol. (4 Marks)

Ethanol + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water
C2H5OH + O2 → CO2 + H2O (Unbalanced)
C2H5OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O (Balanced)

Am I missing something, this just doesn't seem like it's worth 4marks?

4 marks at what level of education, and out of how many total? You're right, so far as it goes, but structural formulae are usually of the ilk of O=C=O or similar. I don't think they'd want a full arrow pushing mechanism, but I don't know.

It's grade 12 work and it's out of 4.

you probably need to add in states...

the question states the structure of ethanol and it also states the formula must be illustrated. i recommend drawing the structural formula of reactants and products, and yes, add the states in (very important). and also, because it is out of 4 marks, there is a key that more vital information is required, so construct a short statement or paragraph explaining how ethanol undergoes complete combustion and because of the oxygen atom within the ethanol molecule does not allow the production of CO (carbon monoxide) and C (carbon).
and also the key verbs hint on what is required of you to answer the question.
that'll be more then enough to answer the question and get full marks
good luck!

interesting
no soot or carbon monoxide poisoning possible??
