Chemical Equilibrium's Lab problem, please help me!!!
« on: April 12, 2009, 01:11:22 AM »
I need to handle in my lab tomorrow, please help me. My question is What information was gained from test tubes A & B?
In tube A, combine 10 drops of Fe(NO3)3 with 10 drops of NaOH. Before addition of NaOH: clear yellow, immediately after addition of NaOH: formation of gas, turbid more orange, 5-10 minutes after addition of NaOH: clear orange.
In tube B, combine 10 drops of KSCN with 10 drops of NaOH. Before addition of NaOH: clear colorless, immediately after addition of NaOH: clear colorless, 5-10 minutes after addition of NaOH: clear colorless.
Thank you everyone for helping me.

You need to show some attempts. Can you write any equilibrium chemical equations down?
No matters what results are waiting for us, it's nothing but the DESTINY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fe(NO3)3 + NaOH <----> Fe(OH)3 + NaNO3
Fe3+ + OH- <----> Fe(OH)3
KSCN + NaOH <----> KOH + NaSCN
SCN- + OH- <---->

I think the reaction of the Iron(III) hexaaqua ion with hydroxide is probably the most relevant

Did you do an experiment where the KSCN was added to the Iron(III) solution. One of the links above gives a specific use for that combination
