How do I write a complete structural formula for this:

NH3 + C4H9COOH -> C4H9CONH2 + H2O

You mean like:

NH3 + C4H9COOH  :rarrow: C4H9CONH2 + H2O

See what I mean...this book is super confusing. "Write a complete structural formula equation for each of the following reactions:"

1. NH3 + C4H9COOH :rarrow: C4H9CONH2 + H2O
2. C5H12 + O2 :rarrow: CO2 + H2O

In that case I believe you have to draw their structures like in my second post.

I.e, drawn like shown in the link: C4H9COOH

But it says "write," this is so confusing. Am I overthinking this stuff? Would I have to draw out everything for that reaction?

                H        H  H  H  H  =O
example: H N + H  C  C  C  C   C   OH  :rarrow:  etc..
                H        H  H  H  H

Yes, I believe that is what you have to do.  :)

Organic chemist usually use a semistructural formulas, eg:
NH3 + CH3CH2CH2CH2COOH = CH3CH2CH2CH2CONH2 + H2O
Note - pentanoic acid has a few structural isomers
Look at Wikipedia

Hello,

I'm working on this exact same question! It's driving me insane! I was wondering if you had any luck with figuring it out? I was doing so well in units 1 and 2...Now I'm completely STUCK! Please help if you can!?

Write a complete structural formula equation for each of the following reactions. First, name the reaction, and then name the reactants and products.

a) C3 H6 + Cl2 (g) ---> C3 H6 Cl2

b) NH3 + C4 H9 COOH ---> C4 H9 CONH2 + H2O

c) C5H12 + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O
