Steam distillation question.
« on: April 22, 2009, 08:18:25 PM »
Hi
I have this question:
Why is that o-nitrophenol is volatile (with steam) while p-nitrophenol is not?
I have thought of this but sounds kind of weird so I dont know if its right or wrong.  :'(
in o-nitrophenol the substituents are closer to each other allowing them to interact with itself (intramolecular) while p-nitrophenol the substituents are far from each other so the can interact with water better thus staying behind.
Again thanks for your *delete me*
Any suggestions?
