Eutectic Salts
« on: May 01, 2009, 12:45:50 PM »
Does anyone know of any links for information on eutectic salts?

I am specifically intrested in information regarding sodium nitrite/potassium nitrate mixtures.  I would really like a melting point curve.

Thanks!

Dear typhoon2028;

Have you already noticed?:

ARGOS,

Thank you for the reply.  The diagram listed on that website is for a mixture of potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate.  I am working with a mixture of potassium nitrate and sodium nitrite.  This mixture has a lower melting point than the mixture of nitrates.

It might have been better to discuss my reason for needing a melting point curve.  We use an eutectic salt mixture to foam plastic.  We have a waste stream that is mostly carbonate and bicarbonate in nature.  Analysis shows that the carbonate waste is predominately sodium carbonate and very little potassium carbonate.  My main problems are this:

1.)  How is my process salt mixture changing in melting point over time, if a known sodium amount is leaving?
2.)  Why is sodium preferred over potassium in the carbonate waste stream?
3.)  How much sodium nitrite can I add to the process to offset sodium leaving?

Dear typhoon2028;

Sorry for misreading!

I searched for "eutectic salts nitrite", when a lot of hits came up.
But I think you have to search yourself to get your wished info, because I have not enough access to different papers.

Good Luck!
