sulfurs mixed valancy

Sulfur forms the sulfate ion by bonding using 2 singel and 2 dobel covalent bonds thus behaving as if it has a valency of 6. However it has 6 electrons in its outer shell, and forms 2 negative ions.
Why is the SO4 2- ion stable over a SO form? Suposedly the same reason can be aplied to explain the instability of the SH2 molecule?
