Alkene reactions
« on: July 03, 2009, 12:11:30 PM »
hey guys,

I was just wondering why do Alkenes want to react, surely they only LOOSE energy rather than GAINING energy, so what is in it for them when reacting.
They USE energy when breaking their double bond and LOSE energy when new bonds are formed

Exactly, I believe you've answered your own question.

It is definitely true that alkenes contain more energy than alkanes...however because they have this additional energy they are thus more unstable...thus one benefit in reacting is the gain in stability as the orbitals switch from sp2 to sp3
