 What is the white powder that is added to a car battery to clean the lead plates?

I beleive that powder is caused by vaporized sulfuric acid from the battery. It gets on the plates and corrodes them. When you add baking soda and water, which works great for getting it off, you'll see an acid-base reaction. Hope this helps.

Have tried the baking soda but am wondering if there is another compound that works better.
