Most common isotope in Boron (B).

Hello,

If there are two isotopes in Boron, -11 and -10, which would be the most common?

I was thinking that the most common would be the one that is the most stable. I have also read that the most stable isotope of Boron has 6 neutrons, the problem is that it doesn't say whether or not it is the -10 or -11 isotope.

Does anyone know which one is the most common and why?

The number of protons is the same as the atomic number, yes? If so, then 5.

What does the -10 and -11 signify in the name of the isotopes?

Their reactivity?

Would that mean that -10 is more reactive than -11? Therefore -11 is the most commonly used isotope for Boron?

The atomic weight of boron on the Periodic Table is 10.811, this means that when you have one mole of boron atoms in a sample (~ 6.022 × 1023 atoms) it would weigh 10.811 grams. So one mole of 10B would weigh 10 grams and one mole of 11B would weigh 11 grams. Now the atomic weight is the: average weight of all the naturally occurring isotopes of that element. For example, chlorine has two naturally occuring isotopes, chlorine-35 which makes up about ~75% of all chlorine atoms and chlorine-37 which makes up ~25% of all chlorine atoms. So the atomic weight of chlorine on the Periodic Table is 75/100 x 35 + 25/100 x 37 = 35.5 roughly. You should be able to see from this example that the boron-11 isotope is the more common one because it's atomic weight is 10.811.
