Job Title: Lab Director : Forensic Toxicology

To assist in responsibilities for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory and to function in the role of “Responsible Person” under HHS guidelines. This position reports to and is evaluated by the Operations Director.

Responsibilities of the lab director are to:

1)   Coordinate with operations director and corporate Offices on issues of substance to the operation of the laboratory.
2)   Participate in management review of the laboratory testing program.
3)   Communicate with and direct activities of direct reports and ensure proper job assignment and completion.
4)   Ensure all security precautions are in place and are followed.
5)   Ensure that there are sufficient personnel with adequate training and experience to supervise and conduct the work of the drug-testing laboratory.
6)   Assure the continued competency of laboratory personnel by establishing and reviewing a program for training and certification of all personnel including clerical, technical, supervisory, and certifying scientists.
7)   Establish and approve the Standard Operating Procedure Manual, which is complete, up-to-date, and available for personnel in the laboratory and followed by those personnel. 
8)   Establish a Quality Control program to maintain acceptable analytical performance for all controls and standards and to ensure proper performance and reporting of all tests results.  This program should also assure and document the validity, reliability, accuracy, precision, and performance characteristics of each test and test system.
9)   Recognize and implement all remedial actions necessary to maintain satisfactory operation and performance of the laboratory in response to:
a)   Quality control systems not being within performance specifications;
b)   System problems, including equipment, reagents, methods or personnel;
c)   Errors in result reporting;
d)   Errors in analysis of performance testing results.
10)   Ensure that sample results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and he or she can assure that the test results provided are accurate and reliable.
11)   Ensure the release of results to the Medical Review Officer or client within a reasonable time from receipt.
12)   Oversight of confirmation testing areas including GC/MS and LC/MS technology, R&D efforts and litigation support.
13)   Review and establishes the instrument maintenance program for all instrumentation.


Job Qualifications:

1.   A Master’s Degree in Toxicology, Chemical, Biological or Pharmacological related discipline. PhD degree preferred.
2.   6+ years of forensic toxicology experience or equivalent, including a minimum of two years in a DHHS certified laboratory.
3.   Previous supervisory or managerial experience.
4.   Detailed knowledge of laboratory testing technologies.
5.   Documented experience/training with the forensic applications of analytical toxicology (court testimony, research, publications, participation in continuing education programs).
6.   Knowledge of SAMHSA and CAP regulations that pertain to Forensic Toxicology.
7.   Strong communication and leadership skills.
8.   Commitment to Customer Satisfaction and Quality processes.
9.   Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
10.   Training and experience in performing laboratory testing and reporting, maintenance of chain of custody, and understanding proper remedial action in response to problems with equipment or procedures.
11.   Demonstrated ability to adapt as needs of the business change.
12.   Previous testimony experience desirable.
