Sulfated battery plates

How can the sulfer be cleaned off the lead plates of a battery?

Sulfur?  ???
I thought it was lead sulfate. You can recharge the battery to convert it back into Pb and PbO2. Unless it is dead, ie, the precipitate has fallen off the electrodes.
